Sir Walter Parratt was organist of St.
George's Chapel and Master of the Queen's (or King's) Music to
Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V, from 1893-1924.
The duties of Master of the Queen's Music (Musick) normally requires
the composition of small works from time to time to celebrate
a Royal birth, marriage or to commemorate a Royal death.
Sir Walter Parratt was the son of Thomas Parratt, an organist
at the Parish Church, Huddersfield. Sir Walter was knighted in
1892. He was a leading organ teacher, appointed Chair of Music
at Oxford University in 1908, succeeding Hubert Parry. Donald
Tovey and Geoffrey Parratt wrote abiography of Sir Walter titled:
Walter Parratt: Master Of The Music.
His monument in Huddersfield
Parish Church records that he was "by example and precept
the outstanding organist of his time".
