There is more about Oxford Road here
and its demolition to make way for Ward Royal

The Royal Windsor Website Forum about Oxford Road is here

Some views of Oxford Road as it was in the early 1960s are featured in our article about On The Beat which was filmed on location in Windsor in the area that was to become Ward Royal a few years later.

Aerial view

An aerial view of Oxford Road running diagonally from the right of the photo with the area that was to become Ward Royal top and centre.

Oxford Road was the main route out of Windsor to the west before the construction of Arthur Road in Victorian times. The original route would have 'dog-legged' to the north at Vansittart Road and then west once more along what is now Maidenhead Road.

N.B. Kelly's directories have odd numbers on the North side of the road, and even numbers on the South, which is incorrect.

Businesses marked * were there in 1950 and 1960. Those marked ** were there in 1950 and 1965.

After the construction of Ward Royal in 1968-1969 a short length of the original Oxford Road remained. The shop that once was home to the pet shop remained for a short while, with Martin's Fish and Chip shop next door.
