This photographic panorama of the riverside at Windsor was taken in the early 1900s after the creation of the first promenade along the length of Barry Avenue. The Thames Hotel, (in 2002 Brown's Restaurant and Bar) is a prominent feature, as are the bonded warehouses of John Courage to the left. This photograph was taken before the building of the promenade extension linking with steps constructed at the same time leading down from Windsor Bridge.
The Thames was in spate when this winter photo was taken, not exactly flooding, but the river flow is considerably faster than in the summer months. Read the Story of the Promenade

1896 River Street Buildings

This 1896 view from across the river illustrates the buildings in River Street that were demolished subsequently to make way for The Thames Hotel.

The 1896 view above has been enlarged from a stereoview taken across the river from the Brocas in 1896. On the extreme left is the point at which the slipway was subsequently constructed at the end of River Street. (formerly known as Bier, Bear or Beer Street). The Thames Hotel was built on the site in the centre of this view.

Hire boats can be seen moored by the river bank.
