The War MemorialFollowing an enquiry from The Windsor Local History Group we were keen to establish the date of the inauguration of the Clewer War Memorial Recreation Ground and the dedication of the War Memorial itself. According to the Slough
Express archives, there was an
inauguration (perhaps marking the
start of construction) on Saturday 28
January 1923 in the presence of the
Earl of Athlone. The Windsor Express
from that time may include more
details. Additional research is
required. We have since acquired this
invitation (below) to the unveiling of
the completed memorial. The date is
30th June 1923. This invitation
belonged to a member of the committee,
Mr Shorter, who was involved in the
construction of the memorial. ![]() The Memorial is reported as being a fountain (more accurately a 'drinking fountain') as was popular in this, pre-vandalism days, constructed from Cornish granite. There are about 180 names noted on the Memorial. The service was conducted by the Rector of Clewer Arthur T C Cowie, assisted by the Vicar of Clewer St Stephen's, the Revd William Edward Boys, vicar from 1917-1930. Before the end of the ceremony, the buglers of the Third Battalion of the Grenadier Guards sounded 'The Last Post' and 'Reveille'. The memorial cost £300 (type unclear) including £195 for the obelisk and the money was raised by public subscription to which the Mayor, the Hon. A P Henderson, contributed generously. |
We are grateful for the following sources of information about cemeteries: The Commonwealth War Graves Commission. 'Before Endeavours Fade: A Guide to the Battlefields of the First World War' by Rose E. Coombs. MBE |
