The Arms of the Borough as shown above
are officially recorded in the College of Arms as having been
entered in 1566 at the Visitation of Berkshire made in that year
by William Hervey Clarenceux, King of Arms, in the following
form:
"Per fess Argent and Vert over all
a Stags Head caboshed Argent attired Sable between the Attires
in chief an escutcheon of France modern and England quarterly
in base a Castle wall with 3 Towers Argent in the central Tower
a Gateway Vert with Portcullis Or."
